Dryers & catalyst

Desiccants are chemicals accelerating the drying process after their introduction in coatings.

The catalysts are chemicals that accelerate the reaction, but they are not contained in the final product.

Desiccants are auxiliary substances that are added to oil paints to speed up the drying process. Chemically, they are catalysts for the oxidative polymerization of vegetable oils. Salts of cobalt, manganese, zirconium, barium, lead, calcium and others can be used as desiccants.

By the mechanism of action, they are divided into two classes: primary, or true, desiccants, and auxiliary ones (promoters) that have an activating effect on primary desiccants. Promoters promote uniform drying of the coating throughout its thickness and increase the stability of true desiccants.

True desiccants are salts of carboxylic acids of transition metals, such as cobalt, manganese, lead, existing in two valence states.

Promoters include salts of calcium, barium, zinc, and zirconium. The mechanism of action of promoters is that, being strong bases, they more actively interreact with the carboxyl groups of alkyd oligoesters, thus eliminating their interreaction with metal salts that are contained in desiccants.

The content of the desiccant added into the finished formulation of alkyd enamels is 0.1-0.2%.
