Unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) is a solution of an unsaturated oligomer (oligoester) in a copolymerizable monomer, for example, styrene, methyl methacrylate. Unsaturated polyester resins are used in combination with peroxides for the production of car putties, sealants.
Oligoesters are obtained by condensation of glycols or other substances having hydroxyl groups and unsaturated dibasic acids. The resin is converted into a solid polymer in presence of a reaction initiator (peroxide) without formation of by-products.
Unsaturated polyester is used as a binder in the manufacture of fiberglass and polymer concrete, which are used to produce a wide range of household and industrial products. Polymers may vary in elasticity, hardness, heat and chemical resistance, etc. depending on the components contained in the resins, and their ratio.
